Jo, a ten-year-old, passes her time by the Shenandoah River with her closest friend Selma, engaging in activities like fishing and collecting scrap metal to get by. However, when her violent, drug-addicted stepfather passes away, Jo makes a bold decision. With Selma by her side, she opts to dispose of the body, take the car, and embark on a cross-country journey to find her biological father, a famed folk musician residing in Los Angeles.
