After losing her admiration for a hero in a horrifying disaster, Kara relocates across the country to join a writing program in Los Angeles. She quickly finds accommodation with Charlie Fratelli, an eccentric and bubbly girl who enjoys drinking wine and flirting with younger men. In this new environment, Kara encounters Jason, a reserved acting student who is drawn to her, although his timid nature stops him from making a move. Instead, Kara is captivated by Paul Reese, an older and more romantic man. Paul, a well-known crime novelist, impresses Kara with his gentle self-assurance.
