Little White Lie
Lacey Schwartz’s narrative unfolds as she grows up in a conventional upper-middle-class Jewish family in Woodstock, NY, surrounded by affectionate parents and a deep-rooted sense of her Jewish heritage. Despite this, people around her often question how a white girl could possess such dark skin. She accepts her family’s explanation that her appearance is due to her dark-skinned Sicilian grandfather. However, when her parents suddenly separate, she begins to suspect otherwise. At 18, she confronts her mother and discovers the truth: her biological father is not the man who raised her, but a black man named Rodney, with whom her mother had an affair.
