Mandela, My Dad and Me

In 2013, Idris Elba produced and launched “Idris Elba presents mi Mandela,” an album that drew inspiration from his experience researching and playing Nelson Mandela in “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” The rich musical heritage of South Africa, both contemporary and historical, deeply influenced him. Connecting with the music that Nelson Mandela would have enjoyed throughout his life significantly helped Elba prepare for the role. Plans were made to record the album in South Africa and Mali towards the end of 2013. Unfortunately, just before Elba’s departure, his father, Winston, passed away. While simultaneously working on the album and promoting his film, Elba had BAFTA award-winning director Daniel Vernon capture his journey. “Mandela, My Dad and Me” chronicles not only the challenges of creating his debut album but also his heartfelt mission to honor two inspirational figures.
