The tipping point for Jan’s decision comes when his father-in-law chooses to end his own life, having exhausted his strength and patience. Jan observes how his grandmother dictated the terms of his grandfather’s life, aging, and even his funeral. Convinced that he and his wife Olga are headed down the same path, Jan reflects on a time when he had his own ambitions and desires. He yearns to reclaim his dignity and autonomy, seeking to take charge of his life once more. His answer lies in escaping his current circumstances. The film simultaneously explores the lives of Jan’s married daughters, Olinka and Alenka, along with their husbands, Erik and Pepík.
