Mark Thackeray, portrayed by Poitier, is a West Indian character who began his teaching career at a school in London’s East End in the 1967 film. Over the years, he dedicated two decades to teaching and another decade to administrative duties. Having educated the offspring of his past students, he is now stepping into retirement.
